As any major prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
